Launch of the Promotion of Open Education Resources in Uganda Schools project

On July 24, 2016, the Internet Society Uganda Chapter launched the promotion of open education resources in Uganda schools at the Red Cross offices in Rubaga, Kampala.

The project seeks to will English reading materials suitable for school children from English to Luganda. Translated materials will be uploaded on the Wikipedia Luganda page.  The team will work with a group Luganda editors affiliated with the African language department at Makerere University to maintain of the language quality of the translated articles.

While focusing on environment and health sectors, the project will work with Nature Uganda and Uganda Red Cross Society to ensure quality of articles about biodiversity and other issues related to sustainable living and development including health and disaster risk reduction respectively.

The project will also train students in the piloted schools to become Wikipedia editors.  This will help create new content in their language, and encourage the use of Wikipedia as an educational resource.

The project is supported by the Internet Society – Beyond the Net grants programme.
