Uganda’s National Internet Governance Forum (UIGF) was successfully held on 7th August 2012 at Imperial Royale Hotel, Kampala. With sponsorship from the National Information Technology Authority of Uganda (NITA-U), the forum was hosted by the Internet Society- Uganda Chapter in partnership with the Collaboration on International ICT in East and Southern Africa (CIPESA).
The Uganda IGF is a multi-stakeholder forum open to representatives from Government, NGOs, academia, private sector, as well as any other entities and individuals interested in Internet Governance (IG) issues.
Discussions focused on raising awareness of online safety in Uganda especially among children, e-government status in Uganda, IPv6 deployment strategies and Uganda’s position on the proposed International Telecommunications Regulations (ITRs).
On the proposed ITRs, Mr. Patrick Mwesigwa from the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) called for a multi-stakeholder approach in contributing to the ITRs. He informed participants that UCC was in final stages of developing a Uganda position paper to be presented at the WICT in December, 2012. The document is currently in available for public comment.
On IPv6 deployment status in Uganda, a representative from Orange Uganda reported that the telecom has taken on deploying IPv6 in Uganda, and to to-date performed training with the Ministry of ICT and is receiving positive responses from customers.
However, the focus of the day was on promoting online safety in Uganda with Mr. James Saaka of NITA -U who urged participants to take serious precaution while introducing internet to young children. He noted that the issue of online safety for children should be take seriously, urging government to come up with regulations that specifically focus on young online users.
Proceedings of this year’s forum will also be presented at the first African Internet Governance Forum to be held in Cairo, Egypt October 2 – 4, 2012, and the global Internet Governance Forum in Baku, Azerbaijan November 6 – 9, 2012.
