The Internet Society Uganda Chapter in partnership with the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) have organised a half day meeting to discuss the Internet Assigned Names and Numbers (IANA) functions transition.
On 14 March, 2014, the US National Telecommunications & Information Administration (NTIA) announced its intent to transition its stewardship of the IANA functions to the global multistakeholder community. The IANA functions have since 1999 been contracted to ICANN by the NTIA. The IANA functions currently include:
- The coordination of the assignment of technical Internet protocol parameters;
- The administration of certain responsibilities associated with Internet DNS root zone management;
- The allocation of Internet numbering resources;
- Other services related to the management of .ARPA and .INT top-level domains.
The NTIA has retained an oversight component with regard to the management of the Internet’s DNS root zone and is now seeking to transition that responsibility to the global multistakeholder community.
In order to ensure Africa’s influence and voice is represented in the final proposal, the ICANN Africa team is partnering ISOC Uganda Chapter and the Ministry of ICT to host a public forum to seek contributions on the two parallel processes developed by the global internet community, namely:-
- IANA Stewardship Transition: Focused on delivering a proposal to transition the stewardship of the IANA functions to the multistakeholder community.
- Enhancing ICANN Accountability: Focused on ensuring that ICANN remains accountable in the absence of its historical contractual relationship with the U.S. Government.
The meeting is set to take place on May 07, 2015 at the Ministry of ICT Access Information Center, located on Parliament Avenue, starting at 8:00am.
