ICT Training for Northern Uganda ICT Teachers Held in Gulu City

In Uganda today, Information and Communication Technology has evolved to greater heights, a factor fueled by the Pandemic which has affected every sector in the country and the world at large. Internet Society Uganda Chapter in partnership with Encrypt Uganda conducted a 3-Day ICT training for ICT teachers from Northern Uganda. The training aimed at empowering the teachers with practical technological skills that enhances their capabilities in the ICT sector especially in preventing online child safety. Following this uniquely packaged training, Online threats experienced by children can lead to devastating psychological experience since some access inappropriate content, graphic content and sexually coursed and harassed that affects their cognitive processing’s fueling attitude and mindset reactions that aren’t good for young people.

Its interesting to note that the teachers were taken through the Child Safety Toolkit that was developed by internet Society Uganda Chapter and adopted by the government to educate, train and raise awareness on existing safety mechanisms of child online. The toolkit also provides for students and pupils to make standard online safety pledges. Additionally, Encrypt Uganda further emphasized the importance of embracing digital security and as well deal with online cyber crimes such as Phishing, Trolling, hackings, identity theft and 2factor authentication/ verification. Encrypt Uganda also took the participants through managing online violence and where to report online violence once experienced.

IN A NUTSHEL, Teacher highly expressed their concerns regarding the recent online teachings which have taken all students online with inadequate knowledge of digital security and device management. The teachers however cautioned parents to be vigilant and utilize functions like activation of parental controls to minimize access to an unauthorized site, or perhaps blocking harmful sites that might cause children not to concentrate in class. This will limit the access of harmful and inappropriate content.
