Encryption is important for education as it aids in the protection of sensitive data like student records and personal information. Simple Encryption Tools such as 7-zip for file encryption and ProtonMail for secure email communication can be used to secure student personal data.
On November 15th, 2024, Uganda celebrated Global Encryption Day with a workshop titled “Cybersecurity for Education: Equipping Teachers and Students with Encryption Tools.” Held at Canon Apolo Core Primary Teachers’ College (PTC) in Fort Portal, the event brought together educators, students, and security experts to discuss critical challenges and solutions for protecting educational institutions in the digital age.
The workshop featured a panel discussion on cybersecurity challenges and solutions for Ugandan schools that highlighted key challenges faced by Ugandan schools. Some of these include- limited resources as many schools lack adequate funds for robust cybersecurity measures; Outdated Technology – where legacy hardware and software systems leave schools vulnerable to cyberattacks; and Lack of cybersecurity awareness among Educators and students who often lack basic cybersecurity knowledge and skills.
To address these challenges, the following solutions were proposed solutions that institutions should leverage collaboration and increase proactive measures:
- Partnerships: Collaboration with technology companies, government agencies, and NGOs can offer discounted security solutions, training, and support. Organisations like the Research and Education Network for Uganda (RENU), Mondo NGO, and ISOC UG itself can be valuable partners.
- Cybersecurity Training: Regular password hygiene, phishing prevention, and data protection training can equip educators and students with essential skills.
- Infrastructure Upgrades: Modernizing school networks and devices can significantly enhance security.
- Regular Security Audits: Regular assessments help identify and address vulnerabilities before they become threats.
The Global Encryption Day workshop provided a valuable platform for engagement on cybersecurity challenges in Ugandan schools. By sharing knowledge and best practices, we can work together to create a more secure digital learning environment for students and staff.
